Van de Oudheid tot vandaag verzamelden botanici hun kennis over kruidachtige planten in kruidenboeken. Kennis die vaak op ervaring, op proberen en mislukken gestoeld was en werd doorgegeven van generatie op generatie.

De titel van dit boek, De Historia naturalis, is een variant op de titel van het roemrijke werk van Plinius de Oudere. Deze Romeinse geleerde leert ons veel over wat men in de Antieke Oudheid wist over de werking van kruiden. Maar ook in de Lage Landen verzamelde men kruidenkennis: de Herbarijs (1351) en Den Herbarius in Dyetische (ca. 1500) vertellen in Oud-Nederlands over kwalen en welk kruid er tegen gewassen was. Rembert Dodoens, Matthias L’ Obel en Abraham Munting kunnen niet ontbreken evenals de Flora Batava (1800-1934).

Dit magistrale referentiewerk laat ruim 100 inheemse planten de revue passeren. Voor elk van deze planten krijg je een overzicht van wie wat wanneer wist (of niet wist) en waarvoor de plant door de eeuwen werd aangewend: om kwalen te genezen, om stoffen te verven, om ongedierte te bestrijden, om leer te looien, om voedsel te bewaren…

Elke plant krijgt een prachtige illustratie waarbij men alle plantenbestanddelen en stadia van de plant kan bestuderen.

Em. prof. dr. Marcel De Cleene is plantenfysioloog. Hij was werkzaam aan de UGent. Naast 150 wetenschappelijke publicaties heeft hij ook boeken geschreven over de relatie natuur/cultuur.
